Ger Reidy

Hello Wednesday!

I hope you all having a good morning!

Yesterday we got a speaker in Ger Reidy he is a furniture designer. Get got to present for us and the first years and explained a little bit more what he does in the workshop and how he designs and plans. He also showed us a few websites that are related to my design such as opendesk.cc they do multi-functional office furniture that is easy to detach.
He also spoke about their main goal try to connect designer the maker and the customer in the process. That the furniture is made locally and not shipped from another country. Their furniture is also non-toxic and easy to maintain.
It is also local employment reducing transport, reducing carbon dioxide.
Ger also spoke about colored MDF surface, if the surface gets scratched or destroyed its easy to sand it, oil up and it's good to go again! The surface will look fresh and new.
The main goal is to use and restore the furniture.

https://www.untothislast.co.uk/ another website furniture that can last for a long tie, they are trying to set their own makers, based in the heart of London that locals make their furniture.
Ger spoke about the valchromat material, it is the material that is made from wood, good for the bathroom, but it's expensive. It is important to understand that even though plastic is bad for the environment it still has its place in furniture.
We also got to learn of Dieter Rom industrial designer and 10 Principles of good design.
10 Principles of good design are:
1. Innovative
2. Useful
3. Aesthetic
4. Makes a product understandable
5. Honest (easy to use)
6. Long-lasting
7. Thought down to the last detail
8. Environmentally friendly
9.  Is as little design as possible (Simple)
10. Likable (up to customer)

"Humans are lazy creatures" Ger was saying that basically something that we design would be easy to pull-out to recycle. That it would be easy to repair everything we design. The furniture should be easy to maintain, easy to repair and easy to put back to Circular Economy.

After his talk, my class and I got to present our designs for W2W competition. I thought it was a great opportunity, I was very excited to present in front of someone new. Ger liked my idea of the gaming table, he also made some suggestions about it that I will 100% use it. I feel very grateful for his help.

Thank you all for reading my blog and I will keep you all updated!
